Occupying the same historic cellars on the outskirts of Haro in Rioja, it is a beacon for traditionally made wines. Unlike most wineries in the region, López de Heredia owns all of its own vineyards and is still operated by the same family that founded it. The winery is today managed by Maria José, Mercedes and Julio César. In the cellar they use the same techniques that were established during the late 1800’s - the use of only natural yeasts, no filtration, and extended ageing in wine barrels built onsite. Some wines are aged up to eight years in barrel prior to extended ageing in bottles prior to release! López de Heredia occupies a unique niche in a wine world constantly reinventing itself. All people who appreciate authenticity owe it to themselves to taste these incredible wines!
Revered by wine critics and sommelier’s alike, Viña Tondonia is López de Heredia’s most famous wine. It is made from grapes harvested from the 100 hectare Tondonia vineyard, which is located on the right bank of the river Ebro. The cuvée includes 75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacho, and 10% Graciano/Mazuelo. Once vinified the wine was aged in barrels for 6 years, developing its characteristic savoury quality. Vibrant garnet in the glass and full bodied, it expresses notes of red currants, baked plums, dill, nutmeg, and vanilla. Delicious right now, it will continue to improve in the cellar for 10+ years.
