Tenuta di Carleone is a relatively young winery based in the Radda area of Chianti Classico, founded in 2012 by Austrian-born Karl Egger and English winemaker Sean O’Callaghan. O’Callaghan, who spent 26 years at Riecine, is known among friends as “Il Guercio” (“one-eyed rascal”) due to being born blind in his right eye. He’s widely recognized for championing a more authentic, less manipulated expression of Chianti Classico.

The region itself is currently at a turning point. Some larger producers are pushing toward styles inspired by Brunello di Montalcino, emphasizing the Gran Selezione category, which often involves heavier oak aging and more extraction. In contrast, Tenuta di Carleone takes a different approach, focusing on minimal oak influence and frequently producing wines from 100% Sangiovese.

Stylistically, while many Gran Selezione wines draw comparisons to Bordeaux, Tenuta di Carleone’s wines are often likened to Burgundy for their purity and elegance. The estate spans about 100 hectares, with 20 hectares dedicated to biodynamically farmed vineyards and another 10 hectares planted with olive trees (some over 60 years old).
