Situated across the Adriatic Sea from Italy, it enjoys an ideal Mediterranean climate with hot, humid summers and mild winters. Generally it can be split into two wine making regions: Continental (Kontinetalna) and Coastal (Primorska). The southern Dalmatian islands are home to some of the countries most diverse wine styles. The island of Brač is famous for the Zlatni Rat (Golden Cape), one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. It is also home to the Stina winery. In 2009 Jako Andabak leased and renovated a waterfront cellar in the resort town of Bol. 50 hectares of new vineyards were planted to mostly local varietals. The name of the winery was taken from the local white stina stone, a favourite of sculptors and artists. Spread across the island, areas of stina were broken down by machine to allow vine cultivation. Some of these sites located at 420 to 550 metres above sea level were prior never planted to the vine. On the south side of the island he purchased the 500 year old Stipančić convent and its 32 hectares of vineyards. His Cuvee Red is a blend of Plavac Mali with Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. One of Croatia’s most planted varieties, Plavac Mali is notable for producing robust reds with a touch of spice. In this wine it has lent aromas of dark cherry and wild mediterranean herbs. The palate is slightly chewy with notes of black plum and pepper. A fruit forward red wine with a nice dash of grit.
