The name, Piolet, is French for ‘ice-axe’; a reference to their shared love of mountaineering. Andy is a former winemaker at Chateau Ste. Michelle, and both he and Alex previously worked at the iconic Quilceda Creek winery. For their own passion project the pair source grapes from some of the finest vineyards in Washington State. Their limited production is quickly snatched up by avid collectors who’ve discovered Piolet Vintners primarily through word of mouth.
Given their experience at Quilceda Creek, you would expect Andy and Alex to make some serious Cabernet Sauvignon. For this cuvee they sourced grapes from five vineyards spread across three AVA’s - Red Mountain, Horse Heaven Hills and Royal Slope. Vinification included 30 days of skin maceration and 22 months aging in 100% new Darnajou & Taransaud Cooperage French oak barrels. It’s deep garnet red in the glass with powerful aromas of black currant, mulberry, boysenberry, dark chocolate, leather and mint. Plush black-fruit flavors on the palate are blanketed by mouth-filling and velvety tannins. Notes of baking spice and vanilla-mocha linger on the finish. Only 175 cases of this wine were made.
“Based on 100% Clone 8 Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon is ruby/plum-hued and has a terrific bouquet of cassis and ripe redcurrants as well as smoked tobacco, spicy oak, lead pencil, and dried flowers. This beauty is ripe, expansive, full-bodied, and straight-up sexy on the palate, with velvety tannins and a great finish. I'd be thrilled to drink a bottle any time over the coming two decades.” - 96 points, Jeb Dunnuck
