Matthieu Barret, born in Aix-en-Provence in 1975, studied viticulture in Beaune and is a seventh-generation vigneron. He joined his grandfather in Cornas in 1997 and, at just 23, took over the family’s 10 hectares of hillside vineyards the following year. Domaine du Coulet, established by his grandfather after WWII, had long focused on farming and selling grapes to top Northern Rhône producers. Matthieu shifted the direction toward estate bottling, guided by a commitment to organic and biodynamic farming. By 2002, the domaine was fully certified biodynamic. Working with low yields and minimal intervention, Matthieu avoids new oak, fining, and filtration, and uses only small amounts of sulphur. His philosophy is centered on purity and transparency, producing precise wines that reflect the character of each vineyard parcel.
