Located near the village of Richelieu south of Tours, this little winery is making big waves in the sommelier community. Vines have thrived on this site since the days of Cardinal Richelieu in the early 1600's. Today the 20 hectares of vineyards are managed according to sustainable principles without the aid of any chemicals or pesticides. François, a modest winemaker, harvests his grapes only when they are perfectly ripe. His approach in the winery is minimalist and traditional.
The Marquis de C is made from 100% Chardonnay, a variety not commonly grown in the Touraine region of the Loire Valley. The grapes were pressed and the juice transferred to 500 litre wooden fûts for fermentation and maturation on lees for 12 months without any battonage. The name for this wine comes from one of the works of the prolific 17th Century French author Charles Perrault who either adapted or was the originator of many fairy tales including Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood and Puss in Boots.
