Typically based on Kékfrankos, the style typically involves 2 to 3 days of skin maceration. Today most examples come from Szekszárd, where the style is also known as “Fuxli” (“fox’s fur”). For the “Piros” Siller, Zoltán Heimann chose to utilize a blend of Kékfrankos, Sagrantino, and Merlot. Pale cherry-garnet in hue, this fun wine reminds us of Beaujolais Nouveau or Northern Italian Schiava. On the nose you find fresh aromas of rainier cherry, tart wild strawberry, raspberry, rose perfume and citrus zest. The palate is light but with more texture than a rosé. High acidity and bright red-fruit flavors are matched by thinly layered tannins. The finish is very refreshing with some lingering bitterness. A wine best served with a slight chill, it’s super versatile for pairing with food.
