His father, Chris Phelps, is something of a living legend. Josh grew up knowing that his father made some of the most coveted wines on the planet. He soaked up as much knowledge as he could so that when the day came when he made his own wines, they would be great in their own right. With Grounded Wine Co the goal is to create wines that evoke a sense of place. Josh works with trusted farmers to source sustainably grown grapes in both California and Washington State. Where his fathers wines firmly rest in the $100+ camp, he focuses on the sub $50 price range. With Californian wine progressively getting more expensive, we applaud Josh’s aspiration to craft wines that are accessible to everyone.
The exact blend for this wine includes 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Petite Sirah. The grapes were harvested from vineyards in Paso Robles and the interior valleys of California’s North and Central coasts. For vinification, a judicious amount of oak aging was used to enhance the natural intensity of the fruit. This fairly full-bodied wine shows ripe notes of blackberry, black cherry, licorice, cocoa and a hint of vanilla.
