Distillers for generations, the family purchased their first 4 hectares of vines in 1974. The domaine grew to include 8 hectares of century-old vines located on the plateau of La Crau, Les Galimardes and on the sandy soils of the so-called Pignan area near the Le Rayas district. The winery is today managed by François and Marie Giraud, who took over from their parents in 1998. Altogether they farm 35 hectares of vineyards.
Considered a “cru” of the Côtes du Rhône, Lirac wines are an affordable alternative to Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The Les Sables d’Arène is made from a blend of 60% Grenache harvested from 60 year old vines, plus 20% Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre. Medium bodied with silky texture, it displays notes of ripe plums, raspberries, lavender, fennel, and bay-leaf. Round and fruit forward, it is very approachable today but will reward 3-5 years of cellaring.
