Recognizing the unique terroir, the monks planted French grape vines imported from Algeria. Amazingly they also discovered Roman-era wine cellars that could be used to store the wines. For decades the Jesuits continued to operate the winery until it was sold to a local consortium of businessmen in 1973. Having navigated difficult times, including a brutal civil war, Château Ksara remains Lebanon’s most successful and largest wine producer.
‘Le Prieuré’ is a heritage blend made from Carignan, Cinsault, Mourvèdre and Caladoc. Named after the winery’s landmark belltower, the wine was vinified in concrete tanks that have been in use for over 150 years.
