Hewitson Gun Metal Riesling

Created in 1998, Hewitson Winery is located in the heart of the Barossa Valley on the historic Seppeltsfield Road. This leading Australian wine estate was founded by Dean Hewitson, who worked in Australia, France, Italy and Oregon prior to founding his namesake winery. Hewitson received his training first at the Roseworthy Agricultural College in north of Adelaide, and then at UC Davis in northern California where he acquired a masters degree. Skilled in both the new and old world schools of winemaking, Hewtison combines the best of both traditions. The vineyard sites that he works with have some of the oldest vines in the world! In addition to dry-farmed sites in Barossa, he also works with single vineyard parcels in Eden Valley, McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. His most prized parcel of vines, the Old Garden Vineyard, holds the world’s oldest selection of Mourvèdre vines, which were planted in 1853!

Australia’s Eden Valley is widely acknowledged as one of the world’s great regions for Riesling, and the Gun Metal Riesling is made from grapes from one of the Eden Valley’s finest sites – Moculta Road Vineyard. The wine is named after the grey-coloured stones that dot the vineyard, and also for the wine’s firm steeliness and gun-powder dryness. Pale straw in colour with a slight green hue, on the nose it has aromas of fresh limes, crunchy granny smith apples, white-peach and wet stone. The palate is crisp and chalky, with sinewy texture and racy acidity. The finish is bone-dry and lasting.
