Provence, southern France’s famed rose region is perfectly situated to be a winemaking haven where the Mediterranean climate coupled with clay, limestone, and gravel soils (known to provide excellent drainage for the vines and delicious mineral notes in the wine) allow grapes and an abundance of other plant life to thrive. Vineyards snuggle up to the hillsides overlooking the Mediterranean Sea on France’s southeastern coast line and in this region rose reigns supreme, accounting for roughly 90% of winemaking in the area. The predominantly planted varietals are Cinsault, Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre and while rose is the most commonly made style in the area, bold and earthy reds from the area are loved by wine drinkers who know what’s up. Winemaking in the area dates back to Roman times when the Med was a hub for exploration and its coastal regions were the first places for soldiers to land and impart their traditions, of which wine was an important one.
Bandol, a sub-region some 50ish kilometers east of Marseille, is a prime winemaking location as it benefits from oceanside breezes and the protection from intense heat that being nestled in a valley provides. The climate in Bandol is typical for its proximity to the Mediterranean, warm dry summers followed by mild winters are a vineyard’s best friend after all! Bandol is a subregion in Provence that is curiously best known for its red wines– Full-bodied, with deep color, concentrated fruit flavors (think blackberries, plums), and firm tannins. These wines are often aged in oak, enhancing their complexity and potential for aging (think 10-20 years). Their roses are some of the more complex styles of Provencal Roses and tend to be more structured compared to other Provençal rosés, often showcasing flavors of ripe red fruits, herbs, and a touch of minerality.
The wine we’ll be tasting in store this week is the Domaine de la Bégude Bandol Rose! The Domaine dates back to the 16th century, though the Chateau du Cavalon family who have run the show there since 1996 have done impressive and extensive work to modernize the vineyards and winery over the years. The estate spans around 50 hectares which are all farmed with sustainability in mind, Domaine de la Begude is an entirely organic operation that follows the guidelines of Biodynamics. Their rose is exemplary for what a Bandol rose should be, it is a blend of Mourvedre, Cinsault and Grenache and boasts notes of red berries, citrus zest, dried herbs and has a nice crisp minerally finish. While it is best enjoyed in its youth, it may develop further complexities after a few years more spent resting in the bottle.
Don't forget to taste the Domaine de la Bégude Bandol Rosé this week while you're in the shop! It's a great option if you're looking for something a bit more complex– This wine is something more exciting than a typical (and delicious!!!) patio pounder style of Rose. It’s for the wine drinker who is looking for a rose that can be paired with grilled chicken, seafood and pork, caprese salads, and anything with lots of oregano!
