The Roagna family has been farming their land and making Barbaresco from it since 1800. The estates contains 15 hectares in some of the most historic vineyards in Barbaresco. The vineyards have been farmed naturally since . . . well, always. The family believes in the concept of treating the vineyard as a "forest" and they allow over 300 different types of grass to grow between the vines together with an assortment of animals that roam through the vineyard to feed naturally.
Luca Roagna is a 5th generation grower, wine-maker and guardian of family tradition; and the family tradition is to make the ultimate in traditionalist Barbaresco wines:
- Natural vineyards
- Natural yeasts
- Neutral oak
- No enzymes
- Long maceration on the skins (60-90 days)
- Aged for 3-5 years in large neutral wood casks before bottling
- No fining, no filtering
- Minimal sulphites added at bottling
Below are what the critics think of this wine:
"The 2015 Barbaresco Pajè is the most nuanced and complete of the four wines in this lower tier of vineyard designates. Deceptively light in body, the 2015 possesses striking complexity and dimensions. Breadth and power are implied more than overtly stated. Clean, minerally notes punctuate the finish. The Pajè packs a serious punch. It will be even better in another few years' time. This is just classic Roagna and the wine in this range that offers the best value. I loved it." 94 Points, Vinous
