Description
The Tornatore family have been tending vines on the slopes of Mt Etna since 1865. Located in the village of Castiglione di Sicilia, the modern Tornatore winery was opened by Giuseppe Tornatore in 2010. A successful businessman, Giuseppe was able to acquire numerous parcels of vines during the early 2000’s. Today the estate consists of 46 hectares of vines planted between 550 to 700 meters above sea level on the cool northern slopes of Europe’s most active volcano.
The Tornatore Etna Rosso is made from 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio harvested from 5 to 15 year old vines. Fermented in concrete tanks, it was aged for 6 months in large oak barrels. This is how the winery describes this wine -“Tornatore Etna Rosso is ruby red wine with faint purple color, a typical trait of the Nerello Mascalese variety, which is not known for rich color. The wine has notes of macerated strawberries and raspberries, morello cherries and black plum, which blend with subtle hints of herbs and earth. Surprisingly full in structure, fine tannins and bright acidity give the wine richness, complexity and persistence. This Italian red wine is appellated from Etna Rosso DOC and is 95% Nerello Mascalese and 5% Nerello Cappuccio.”
