Sorrenberg Bordeaux Blend

In the words of Australian wine writer James Halliday – “Barry and Jan Morey keep a low profile, but the wines from their vineyard at Beechworth have a cult following not far removed from that of Giaconda”

Sorrenberg is one of the great Australian family-owned wineries. Located in northeastern Victoria, the tiny 2.5 hectare Sorrenberg vineyard is meticulously farmed according to biodynamic principles with absolutely no shortcuts taken. The vines were first planted in 1984 by Barry and Jan Morey. Barry’s family, whose grandfather Jacob Barzen emigrated to Australia from Germany, has been making wine for 500 years. The name Sorrenberg comes from a small vineyard owned by the Barzen family near a town called Reil on the Mosel. The vineyards are set mainly on granite rock with a sandy loam, which does have the advantage of being on the border where the granite meets the red mudstone, giving the soil greater water holding capacity. The finesse and elegance of Sorrenberg wines can be attributed to the fact that it is one of the highest vineyards on granite soil in the Beechworth region.

The Sorrenberg Bordeaux Blend consists of 30-40% Merlot and Cabernet Franc, a touch of Malbec, Petit Verdot, and Carmenere with the remaining Cabernet Sauvignon. Vinified naturally with wild yeasts, maturation took place in oak barrels for 24 months. Following final blending, the wine was bottled without filtration. Full bodied and well structured, this complex wine has deep notes of black plum, black currant, dark cherry, and oak spice. The cellaring potential of this wine is at least 12 years.
