We are constantly going on and on about how Spain is the king of under-priced wines. Seriously, there are not many wine regions that can compete with Spain in the $20 range. Case in point, we have this beauty from Jumilla in southeastern Spain. The Parajes del Monastrell is made from 80 to 90 year old organically farmed vines! Winemaker Maria Jover works in the traditional “Terraje” system, where the owner rents the land to farmers who in turn give back 7% of the grapes harvested. Made from 100% Monastrell, aka Mourvèdre, this red wine is the perfect option for early Autumn barbecues. Youthful and exuberant, it is ruby red in colour with juicy notes of blueberry, blackberry, and raspberry. Finishing with medium bodied tannins and a little spice, it packs plenty of punch for just over $20.
