Lyrarakis Dafni Psarades
$30.62
Domaine Lyrarakis was founded in 1966 in the Cretan village of Alagni. Situated south of the city of Heraklion, this family owned winery has played a pivotal role in saving the island’s indigenous varieties from obsolescence. If not for Manolis Lyrarakis and his brother Sotiris, grapes such as Plytó, Dafní, and Vidiano, would have likely been forever lost. In fact, they were the first to ever produce a single varietal Plytó for commercial sale. Today only 6 hectares are planted to this variety on Crete. So small was their winery, that up until 1992 their entire production was sold in bulk. Today the winery is managed by Sotiris’ son Bart, who produces wines from both local and international varieties.
If the only success that Manolis and Sotris has ever enjoyed was to have revived the fortunes of the Dafní grape variety, their contribution to the world of wine would have still been deemed instrumental. The characteristics of this nearly extinct indegenous Cretan varietal are unique and wonderful. Dafní in Greek means “laurel”, and it is clearly apparent why that name has been given to this variety. One sniff and you’re transported to a lush Greek garden planted with wild mediterranean herbs and orchard fruits. Aromas of bay laurel, rosemary and eucalyptus, complement crisp notes of nectarines and grapefruit. Elegant and aromatic, it’s a faultless pairing for fried seafood.
