The Lubanzi wine project is named after a wandering dog who joined two exchange students for a week as they journeyed across South Africa in 2014. Driven by a mission to establish a socially-conscious wine business, Charlie Brain and Walker Brown returned to South Africa in 2016. Working with winemakers Trizanne Barnard and Bruce Jack, the duo established contacts with grape growers throughout the region. Adhering to a mantra of ‘locally run, globally minded’, the winery is Certified B Corp. Lubanzi also pledges half of the profits to the Pebbles Project, which supports low-income families who work on South Africa’s wine farms.

Dark ruby-red in appearance, on the nose you find lush aromas of blackberry jam, blueberry, currant, dark chocolate, and cracked black pepper. Mouth Coating black-fruit flavors are complemented by sweet tannins and balanced acidity on the medium bodied palate. Hints of roasted meat and sweet tobacco linger into the charmingly earthy finish.
