Bodegas Frontonio is the personal project of young gun Fernando Mora MW, hailing from the Valdejalón appellation (technically an IGP, not a DO) of Aragón. These scintillating wines are some of the very best being made today east of Rioja and west of Conca, and they’re already garnering effusive praise from both Luis Gutiérrez and Jancis Robinson. Best of all, prices are very fair for the high quality—and the quality begins in the vineyard: Mora and his team own fifty hectares of beautiful old bush vines in rocky clay-limestone selected for high altitude and north-facing exposition to emphasize freshness. And although this is Garnacha country (Aragón, in fact, is thought to be the birthplace of Garnacha), the whites are every bit as fascinating and delicious as the red.

“The fresh and pure Garnacha 2018 Supersónico was produced with grapes from two hectares of old vines in the village of Sestrica at close to 1,030 meters in altitude (the highest altitude of all their vineyards) on complex soils with slate, granite and limestone and cropped from a cool and rainy year. They cut the grapes to limit alcohol to 13.5% alcohol and achieve great freshness; to preserve this, they fermented it in oak and concrete vats with 30% foot-trodden full clusters, followed by a long maceration (40 days) and matured in used oak 500-liter barrels and 2,500-liter oak foudres for one year. This is really aromatic and expressive, with tons of notes of violets, a little exuberant and somehow reminiscent of the aromatics of Touriga Nacional, and there’s a sensation of grape pulp, plump, juicy and tasty, with very fine tannins, subtle and elegant.
