Evesham Wood 2015 Le Puits Sec Pinot Noir

Evesham Wood has been a revelation for us. Rarely do we encounter a  winery that has successfully flown under the radar of most consumers, that produces such truly exceptional wines. It wouldn’t be overstating the fact that this may be one of the most underrated wineries in the Willamette Valley. Founded by Russ Raney in 1986 after training with the legendary Henri Jayer in Vosne-Romanée, the estate started with 3.23 hectares of vineyards planted on the eastern side of the Eola-Amity Hills ridge. Known locally as “Spring Valley”, the area has one of the best microclimates in all of Oregon. After twenty years of making wine, Russ and his wife Mary began working closely with Erin Nuccio. Feeling the time was right, they sold the winery to Erin in 2010, who has maintained the same approach to winemaking.

This is how Erin describes the library release of the 2015 Le Puits Sec Pinot Noir – “While from a distance–and on paper–2015 and 2014 looked remarkably similar, they drink quite differently from one another. In the final weeks before the 2015 harvest the heat finally broke. This slowed the accumulation of sugars and allowed for the grapes to preserve their acidity which gave us a little more liberty in our picking decisions. As is true with the rest of our Cru 2015 bottlings, we see much more focus and balance than was seen in the 2014’s. Plum, violet, forest floor and dried provencal herbs flows to more plum with raspberry coming in and finishing with medium weight, baking spices and a touch of cinnamon. While phylloxera slowly works its way through our estate vineyard we’re quite happy to still not see any significant decrease in our estate Pinot production.”
