Evesham Wood 2014 Puits Sec Pinot Noir

Evesham Wood has been a revelation for us. Rarely do we encounter a  winery that has successfully flown under the radar of most consumers, that produces such truly exceptional wines. It wouldn’t be overstating the fact that this may be one of the most underrated wineries in the Willamette Valley. Founded by Russ Raney in 1986 after training with the legendary Henri Jayer in Vosne-Romanée, the estate started with 3.23 hectares of vineyards planted on the eastern side of the Eola-Amity Hills ridge. Known locally as “Spring Valley”, the area has one of the best microclimates in all of Oregon. After twenty years of making wine, Russ and his wife Mary began working closely with Erin Nuccio. Feeling the time was right, they sold the winery to Erin in 2010, who has maintained the same approach to winemaking.

The 2014 vintage shows a density of fruit and tannin that is rare in Puits Sec. Damson, violet, forest floor and dried Provençal herbs flow to more black plum with raspberry, coming in and finishing with firm, but medium weight potpourri and black cherry nuances. Despite the power and muscle of the 2014 vintage, Le Puits Sec’s signature silky, harmonious texture and balance is on full display.
