Eduardo Torres Acosta Quota Nave

Born in the Canary Islands, Eduardo Torres Acosta moved to Sicily from in 2012 to work harvest as an intern with Arianna Occhipinti’s cellar. He now splits his time between working at Pasopisciaro and running his own project. He farms 4.6 hectares of vineyards on Etna, divided among eight different plots. Producing his first vintages at Arianna Occhipinti’s winery in Vittoria, he now has a small winery on Etna.

The ‘Quota N’ is made from a field blend of 50% Nerello Mascalese, 20% Grenache, 30% Grecanico, Carricante, Coda di Volpe. The grapes were harvested from a beautiful half-hectare parcel of ungrafted (hence piedi franco on label), mixed-variety, very old bush vines in the contrada or district of Nave. He is in the process of restoring these widely spaced, 80-100-year-old bush vines, treating each of these gems like an individual at a fragile stage of life. The vineyard is surrounded by ancient stone walls and features quite rocky, sandy volcanic soils. The name “Quota N” pinpoints the parcel quite literally: the tiny dirt road running by is called the Strada Quota Nave. Eduardo was not permitted to use the full word “Nave” because its 1070-meter altitude exceeds the limits of the DOC.

The bunches are hand-harvested, partly de-stemmed, co-fermented spontaneously with native yeasts and without sulfur or temperature control. Maceration lasts around 15 days. The wine is aged for 9 months in concrete and old barriques with minimal racking and bottled without fining or filtration and with a tiny amount of sulfur.2000 bottles produced in 2019 (a balanced, classic Mediterranean vintage).
