Clos du Val Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

Founded in 1972 by John and Henrietta Goelet, Clos Du Val played a key role in launching the Californian wine revolution. A competitor in the famed 1976 Judgment of Paris blind tasting, where the best of California went up against the best of France, the estate has always focused on producing wines inspired by the great domaines of Burgundy and Bordeaux. In fact, it was a Clos Du Val Cabernet Sauvignon that took the crown in the Judgment of Paris rematch in 1986. Based in the world famous Stag’s Leap District in the Napa Valley, the winery is today led by winemaker Ted Henry.

In the words of the winemaker – “2006 was another year of unusually high rainfall, with some late rains similar to those we saw in the previous year. Spring was relatively cool and bud break occurred a month later than the previous year. Summer temperatures were fairly mild, despite a brief heat spike in May and a more intense one in July. Harvest, which started in mid-September and lasted through the end of October, was marked by perfect weather. The end result is another excellent Clos Du Val vintage of concentrated, flavorful wines… Clos Du Val has created world-class Cabernet Sauvignon since 1972, and this latest vintage continues the winery’s tradition of balanced, elegant and complex wines made to enjoy with a meal. Deep purple-black in color, the 2006 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon has aromas of black currant, cassis and spice. Intense flavors of black fruit, dried herbs and a hint of spice fill the mouth. The wine has a powerful, solid middle and a chalky, lingering finish. Expect this Cabernet Sauvignon to age gracefully for an additional 5-10 years.”
