The trailblazing Ancre Hill Estates sits at the heart of the rolling valleys that define the Welsh Marches, where 12 hectares of vineyards sit alongside the more traditional agricultural pursuits that have defined this land for centuries. Ancre Hill were amongst the very first estates in the UK to farm in accordance with the biodynamic calendar and make wines naturally without unnecessary manipulation in the cellar.  It is the brainchild of Richard Morris, his wife Joy and their four children. Richard’s back ground is in the City. The first vineyards were planted in April 2006 the second the following year.

The first site, called Folly View, is a six acre site planted mostly to Chardonnay and Seyval Blanc with a small amount of Triomphe and Pinot Noir. The second ‘Town’ site is 4 acres of Pinot Noir. Both vineyards have a south facing aspect and have limestone soils. Richard has sunk a huge amount of thought and effort into making Ancre Hill a thoroughly ‘eco-friendly’ winery; all water is re-used having been through an extensive reed-bed filtration system, while the walls are made of straw bales! The aim is to be as carbon neutral as possible.

The style of wine at Ancre Hill Estates continues to evolve, with small batch fermentations occurring almost entirely in oak barrels and concrete eggs. There are also a number of squat concrete fermenters, named after the seven dwarves. Fermentations are solely carried out by wild yeasts and bacteria, with the avoidance of filtration and fining for the finished wines wherever possible

The Ancre Hill Estates Blanc de Noirs is made from 100% Pinot Noir. Fermented in a combination of oak barrels, concrete eggs, and stainless steel tanks, it was aged 2-3 years on the lees.
