Lisbon-born civil engineer Alvaro Castro has been winemaker at Quinta da Pellada and Quinta de Saes since 1980. Amazingly he had no prior winemaking experience before taking over his family’s wineries. Over the past 40+ years he has developed a reputation as a fierce traditionalist who’s watched trends come and go. Driven to “reflect the soil”, he farms some of the region’s oldest vineyards.

The blend for this wine includes Alfrocheiro (a temperamental grape mostly grown in Dão), Touriga-Nacional (a key grape of the Douro) and Jaen (Spain’s Mencia). The grapes were organically farmed and handpicked. Fermented in steel tanks with ambient yeasts, the wine matured 18 months in a mix of used and new French oak barrels.
